With the carnival but a few months away, official ‘Carnavalesca’ Maeve and her troupe of costumier volunteers have been hard at work preparing costumes, so I thought I’d give our blog readers a sneak preview of how they are shaping up…
One of the themes for the costumes ties in with one of the other highlights of 2008 Capital of Culture Year - the Klimt restrospective being held at Tate Liverpool. This prestigious exhibition, running from 30th May to the 31st August, is the most extensive of its kind ever held in the UK, so eagerly awaited by art lovers that late opening hours have been arranged to accommodate the demand for tickets.
One of Gustav Klimt’s most iconic works - ‘The Kiss’, created during his ‘Golden Phase’, will be shown in Liverpool for the first time during this exhibition. As an homage to this elegant work, Maeve captured some ’dazzling, decorative’ style in the luxurious capes being created for some of the carnival ‘destaques’, sharing the same spirit of shimmering excess.
John Galliano had the same idea when creating his Dior Spring Summer 2008 collection, taking influence from Klimt’s highly intricate detail and rich colour palette… Ahh. Liverpool Samba School, we are so Haute Couture ;)
